\n1. Define depth of field in your own words.
\nThe distance and clarity of your subject that is being focused on.
\n2. What does DOF do?
\nIt is all about the amount of light that enters the camera and the type of lens that you use, using a smaller aperture will give you a larger depth of field and a larger aperture will give you a smaller depth of field.

\nI couldn't find any background information on Depth of field but i do have examples -

\nDepth of field is what blurs other things, but keeps the subject in focus. It differs from Aperture, because it is based mainly on distance, rather than lens or shutter size.
\n
\nDepth of field helps isolate unimportant subjects, and keeps the main objects in focus. It helps keep the main focus the main idea. Your eyes will be focused to that point of the photograph.
\n
\nDOF was found originally in old SLR camera's, but are still found today. In a recent digital camera, the screen was touch sensitive, so you could touch which part was the main focus.
